Having trouble believing it’s December. Got to get that package in the mail!
I’m sore from nunchucks yesterday. My first class was at 8:00 am.
I went to the parking lot by the fire station today at 8:00pm and joined in with the dancing ladies. They all seemed very excited to have a lao wei (foreigner) dancing with them.
I thought it might be interesting to look up some more on the history surrounding the “dancing ladies” as I’ve called them. Apparently they have routes in the cultural revolution, and are surprisingly controversial. They’re known as “dancing grannies” and apparently there have been many complaints about the noise of their music (which I find surprising seeing as firecrackers would go off outside my window at least once a week, if not every day. Around festivals it was impossible to teach because of the noise! The constant honking of horns on the streets is just part of the atmosphere.) Also “dancing grannies” sometimes have rival dancing groups and have gotten into fights over spaces to dance! I didn’t see anything like this, but (and maybe I’m a terrible person in saying this,) in my mind the idea of two Chinese grannie dancing gangs getting in a fight is amusing at the least.
